Mailboxes

Cool mashup, here, helps you find a US mail drop box. I see a correlation between the niceness of the neighborhood and the placement of a box. (via lii.org)

When the Metallurgist first moved to Chicago the mail system vexed her, as I explained that we didn't have outgoing mail at our apartment but simply dropped it in mailboxes on the street corners.

"And the boxes are everywhere!" she said, amazed.

Though, there are a lot.

I've always been a fan of dropping mail in a big blue mailbox, though I can't say why. It feels grown up? Urban? Nah, not urban, because I grew up in the 'burbs, walking along a strip mall's sidewalk to drop things in for Mom, then catching up with her in the grocery store.

Oh, and, Yes, that's a lot of mailboxes. But my first impression was, Wow, that's a serious street grid.
