Hey! Some varieties of marsh mallows grow in Virginia! They bloom pink and white this time of year. I did not know they were connected to sugary treats. Boing Boing knew. That means that early marshmallows were vegetarian-friendly.
Oh--they must grow in downtown Washington! :-) I'll need to do a bit of research, though, to see what they look like. I'm willing to bet there are quite a lot in the wetlands near the Bay.
Funnily enough, there *are* some in D.C.! P and I were there this weekend and I spotted them in the gardens near the museums. One place I am sure of is in that garden along 7th St., walking away from the Mall and towards Penna. Ave.
C, of course, works in English America's oldest swamp.

Hey! if they grow in Virginia, they must grow in Maryland, too. I'm going to be on the lookout, as I've always been curious to try "real" marshmallow.
You'll have to venture into swampy territority. And I don't mean your basement.
