Not That It's a Race

... but I was pleasantly startled to see that my first birthday card came from CNB, the originator of Birthday Week (or does she celebrate Birthday Month?)!

Details remain elusive on the fire at Lovings last night. Meanwhile, how many restaurants will have to serve canned vegetables this weekend??

Not really connected, but kindof interesting. I had a dream that the Ukrop's, and all the shop fronts on Forest Hills Avenue caught fire last night. The buildings seemed to all be intact, but their insides were glowing with red flame. I remember telling my Mom, "Mom, you're just going to have to shop at Stony Point from now on--I'm sorry." Weird.

You know what's extra weird? The old Forest Hill Ukrop's was flattened a year or more ago so they could get better access to the land beyond it. A couple of months ago, I went to the opening of the Target Greatland that's there, now! There's a bigger Ukrop's and some other stuff, too.

No way!! Oh man, that's pretty sad. That old shopping center was such an example of Americana when I was a kid...You had the "Whistle Stop Train Shop" where you could run an electric train, the "Ben Franklin" drug store, the weird "Harem House" haircuttery that always had the shades drawn, and other mildewy smelling shops. But the Ukrops was the glue that held it all together. My old stomping grounds have turned into a mecca for Super Chain Mega Stores. :(
